Balancing Acts
Explorations of the artful life in wax and encaustic

July 30-September 4, 2016
Artist’s Reception: Thursday, August 4 from 5-7 pm

Balancing Acts features seven artists who work with wax to explore themes of precarious balance–of not tipping the scales, and of triumphing over uncertainty. Why wax or encaustic? The medium lends itself to construction, transparency, incising, and mark-making in a way all its own. Lushly beautiful and aromatic, wax seduces with tactility while asking questions about form and content, and how we choose to express subjects and themes.

Curated by Debra Claffey, featured artists are: Jeanne Borofsky, Debra Claffey, Pamala Crabb , Kimberly Curry, Angel Dean, Soosen Dunholter and Helene Farrar.

Pop-in Art Event: Free Encaustic Demo
Saturday, August 27th from 1-3 pm

Free Demo: Jeanne Borofsky, Encaustic and Encaustic Monotypes
Balancing Acts artist, Jeanne Borofsky will be showing us how she uses encaustic (hot wax) to create mono- types using a “hot box” (i.e. an aluminum plate over a box with 100 watt bulbs inside). The colored wax melts on the surface, so you can “paint” or “draw” with it and into it.

Jeanne Borofsky BFA, MFA, is an internationally recognized artist with paintings, prints and drawings in numerous museums and private collections.  She has been a practicing artist for over 50 years. A member of New England Wax, she will be doing demos of encaustic painting and monotypes.

Who are the happiest people on earth? A craftsman or artist whistling over a job well done. A little child building sand castles. A mother, after a busy day, bathing her baby. A doctor who has finished a difficult and dangerous operation, and saved a human life. Happiness lies in a constructive job well done. Get your happiness out of your work or you will never know what happiness is.
